Watch out for False Bible Teachers
By Moshe Schwab
As I’ve written before, God wants us to actually do what is right and not just think we are right. Proverbs 12:15 CJB says, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes.” God wants us to keep His commandments, “Therefore you shall love the Lord your God, and keep His charge, His statutes, His judgments, and His commandments always;” Deuteronomy 11:1 NKJV. Notice in Deuteronomy it says to love God and keep His commandments. If we love God, we will keep His commandments. Ya'akov talks about keeping God's commandments in James 1:22 CJB, "Don't deceive yourselves by only hearing what the Word says, but do it!"
In Matthew, Yeshua (Jesus) says that the commandments to love God (Deuteronomy 6:5) in the Torah and love your neighbor (Leviticus 19:18) are two of the most important commandments (among many).
Matthew 22:36-40 CJB. A Torah expert asked Yeshua a question (mitzvot means commandments),
"Rabbi, which of the mitzvot in the Torah is the most important?" He told him, "'You are to love ADONAI your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.' This is the greatest and most important mitzvah. And a second is similar to it, 'You are to love your neighbor as yourself.' All of the Torah and the Prophets are dependent on these two mitzvot."
Yeshua did not teach there are only two commandments. He said that the Torah (law) and the Prophets depend on these two commandments not eradicate the Torah and the Prophets. There are some though who teach there are only two commandments. Think about it; if we are to interpret for ourselves what it means to love God and our neighbor (if there are only two commandments), then we are doing what is right in our own eyes. The Bible says that isn't right in very strong terms.
We need to be careful who we believe. Do we believe God when He says to keep His commandments or do we believe false teachers? I say this because I have run into some of these people who say there are only two commandments. I’ve also run into people who say there is only one commandment which is to be only led by the Holy Spirit. When I’ve talked to them and mentioned there are more than two applicable commandments in the Bible they say I am wrong.
Kefa (Peter) said, “There will be false teachers among you;” 2 Peter 2:1 CJB. Kefa says about them, “Their punishment, decreed long ago, is not idle; their destruction is not asleep! For God did not spare the angels who sinned; on the contrary, he put them in gloomy dungeons lower than Sh'ol to be held for judgment;” 2 Peter 2:3-4 CJB. It says that God held the angels accountable for their sin. Kefa also said about these false teachers, “They will be paid back harm as wages for the harm they are doing;” 2 Peter 2:13 CJB. Do you want to be lumped in with these false teachers that God will hold accountable? I don’t think you do; so be aware of this false teaching.
The Bible says that we will rise from the dead and be judged for what we do someday; so, we should seek the wisdom of God and His commandments. God gave us His commandments to help us. “Therefore, observe them; and follow them; for then all peoples will see you as having wisdom and understanding;” Deuteronomy 4:6 CJB. If we turn down God’s good commandments, we are turning down God. Those who don’t follow God’s ways will be cast in the “lake of fire” the Bible says.
It’s our choice; God knows what’s best because He is the creator. We are not God even though some think they are. It really isn’t a matter of preference. Sometime in the future, God will bring to judgment those who do evil and reward those who do good and follow God's commandments. Revelation 20:12-15 CJB says:
And I saw the dead, both great and small, standing in front of the throne. Books were opened; and another book was opened, the Book of Life; and the dead were judged from what was written in the books, according to what they had done. The sea gave up the dead in it; and Death and Sh'ol gave up the dead in them; and they were judged, each according to what he had done. Then Death and Sh'ol were hurled into the lake of fire. This is the second death - the lake of fire. Anyone whose name was not found written in the Book of Life was hurled into the lake of fire.
It says in the following scriptures that there will be a new heaven and earth; it will be a great place. Wouldn’t we want the wonderful things that God has for us? After all, He is the creator and nothing is impossible for Him. Revelation 21:1,4, 6-8 CJB says:
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, … 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will no longer be any death; and there will no longer be any mourning, crying or pain; because the old order has passed away. … 6-8 To anyone who is thirsty I myself will give water free of charge from the Fountain of Life. He who wins the victory will receive these things, and I will be his God, and he will be my son. But as for the cowardly, the untrustworthy, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those involved with the occult and with drugs, idol-worshippers, and all liars - their destiny is the lake burning with fire and sulfur, the second death."
It says that anyone who wants what God wants for us will be rewarded, no charge! We just need to make the effort to find out how to live right from the Bible and then do it.
I hope this will help you and encourage you to actually do what is right and not just think you are right. Start out by loving God and others and then grow up spiritually and keep the commandments that are in the Bible. It says in the Bible we are to grow up, be mature. Those who learn how to follow God’s commandments are, “Those whose faculties have been trained by continuous exercise to distinguish good from evil;” Hebrews 5:14 CJB. We are to make the effort to grow up spiritually. We are not God; God knows what is best for us and the best way to live. We get rewarded for following God’s commandments in the present and then we receive an amazing future eternal reward. No one can decide that for you. It is your decision to do things God’s way or not.
